Ballad Summary: “Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight”
Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight
Lord Maxwell takes farewell of the people and places he must leave behind when he sets sail to go into exile after his killing of Lord Johnstone. Johnstone had caused his father’s death and he had long sought to avenge him. Lord Maxwell’s lady suggests that he could take refuge in her brother’s tower but he says he must go. He gives his lady a ring, urging her to remember him, and says that, if she takes another lord while he is away, he will immediately slay him on his return.
